   Spring and Labour Day

In the former Soviet Union, 1 May was International Workers' Day and was celebrated with huge parades in cities like Moscow. Though the celebrations are low-key nowadays, several groups march on that day to protest grievances the workers have. Celebrations of May 1 lost their political meaning in Russia after 1991. Some political parties and labor unions may have demonstrations on this day. Many Russians use this public holiday to relax. Some may go on a retreat to their country homes (called dachas) to work in the garden or spend time with their families. It is also common for people to have picnics or barbecues. Easter in Russia is one of the most important Russian holidays. The Russian Orthodox Church celebrates Easter according to the Orthodox calendar, and it can occur in April or May. Like many countries in Eastern Europe, Russians celebrate Easter with decorated eggs and special foods and customs.

It is celebrated after March 21, the first Sunday after a full moon. It is celebrated to honour the awakening of new life in nature. It is connected with the word ‘east’ , where the sun rises. Christians related the rising of the sun to the resurrection of Jesus and their own spiritual rebirth. The most popular emblem of Easter is the Easter egg. Nowadays Easter eggs are made of chocolate, but the custom of painting eggs at Easter time is still very popular. The Easter bunny brings Easter eggs in a fancy basket.
Easter will be celebrated on April 8th, 2012. Greek/Orthodox Easter will also be celebrated on Sunday, April 15, 2012.
