This day is a celebration of all women, young and old. Russian mothers, grandmothers, sisters and aunts get flowers and gifts. Men do all the housework and cook. There are special TV programmes about women too. Nowadays , progressive woman play a great role in the fight for peace and national independence. For most Russians, this holiday is a symbol of coming spring, of love, and of respect for all women.
Defense of the Motherland Day honors those who are currently serving in the Armed Forces and those who served in the past. The day was first celebrated in Moscow in 1922 as "Day of the Birth of the Red Army”. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the holiday got its present name. Women make presents to men.
Valentine's Day is celebrated in Britain and America. This holiday is loved by children and grown-ups. Children exchange greeting cards in school. Sweethearts exchange cards. Men give flowers or candy to the women they love (wife, daughter, mother, girlfriend). Boys and girls as well as grown-ups send valentines to their friends. A valentine is a little picture very often funny one with a little poem. Schoolchildren enjoy buying or making valentines for their friends and teachers and very often they write ‘From guess who’. The person who receives it must guess the name of the sender. Who gets more valentines than the other children
